Ty's Birth Story

We got a call from the hospital on December 18th at around 2:30pm letting us know that they were ready for us to come in.  We quickly packed our bags.  Brooke was SO excited.  She quickly put her shoes on and asked if she could come.  She said that she would be SUPER quiet and even just wait in the car.  We tried to explain that it takes a long time and it's illegal to leave her in the car.  She was so sad.  When we checked back on her later Nani told us that she had put on her nicest dress and was just waiting for us to call.  How cute.  This is my last pregnant picture. .. until the next baby of course. ;)  We filled out the paperwork at admitting and got settled in room #2, our delivery room which was unexpectedly quite spacious.  I expected things to move quickly along since Brooke was also induced and I was only in labor for 5 hours with her.  I went in being silated to a 2 and 80% effaced. We figured he would be born sometime around 9 or 10pm.  They started me on the gels.  I was flat for an hour and then we walked the halls for an hour.  We did this twice and the contractions really got going.  After 4 hours of labor they let me know that if I wanted an epidural anytime soon I should do it because the anesthesiologist was headed out for a while.  I looked at Craig and we decided that I should get one.  The anesthesiologist was great and did a wonderful job unlike my one with Brooke.  Part of the reason I wanted to hold off on the epidural was because I remembered how horrible it was when they administered it last time.  After that I watched the 2 hour season finale of Survivor while Craig got some dinner at home.  It's nice only being 5 min. from the hospital.  I think they checked me around then and I was only dilated to a 4.  I knew it was going to be a LONG night.  I tried to get some sleep to no avail.  My epidural started to only work on 1 side so I would have to switch laying from one side to the next every half hour to help things even out.  At midnight I was dilated to a 7.  After that I watched a lot of lame t.v., watched the clock, watched the babies heart monitor, and watched my contractions.  Then I started throwing up and had to get hooked up to an oxygen mask.  Finally at around 2 in the morning my nurse came in and asked how I was feeling.  I felt extremely achy and uncomfortable but still didn't feel a lot of pressure.  She said she would come in and check me again in an hour.  I said something that convinced her to check me then.  I don't remember what I said.  I was really out of it.  That is when she panicked a little.  His head was right there.  I just remember her saying "Don't push, don't push - I'll get your doctor right away."  Oh how I wanted to push.  We waited an HOUR for my doctor to get there and I pushed through 1 contraction and he was out.  2 1/2 pushes was all it took.  Craig was there holding my hand the whole time.  Words can't express how amazing it feels when they place your baby on your chest.  He was BEAUTIFUL!!  I always tear up.  It's such a miracle.  He wanted to nurse right away.  After that Craig went with the nurses and our sweet baby Ty while the Doctor finished up with me.  I was shocked to find out that he was 8lbs even and 20 1/4 inches long.  My biggest baby.  I held him for an hour. By the time they finished up in the delivery room and took me to the recovery room it was 4:30 in the morning.  I tried to stay awake for his first bath but I was too exhausted and was in and out for the next couple hours.  It seemed like as soon as I would fall asleep someone would come in to check me or the IV line would start beeping.  Neither Craig or I got much sleep that night but we were so excited to welcome our healthy happy baby boy into this world.  Who would have thought that my third baby would be my longest and most difficult labor. It just goes to show that every baby and labor/delivery is different.

Brooke loves her baby brother!

Dr. Heard-Vaughn with baby Ty.

Jace loves his baby brother.  He has already given him a nickname: Ty Ty.

Going home in a stocking.

Welcome home, baby Ty!

Chillin' with Aunt Katie and Brooke.

AFTER COMING HOME:

Brooke has realized that baby Ty takes a lot of mommies time and gets a lot of attention.  She is having a harder time than we thought she would.  She wants to play games with me all the time and I feel so bad when I'm nursing baby and I just can't.  She's been very emotional and cries a lot.  She's been the baby for a such a long time and it's a hard adjustment.  I've heard it likened to having your husband bring home his secretary and telling you that it's a permanent condition and there is nothing you can do about it.  Poor Brooke.  She still loves the baby but I have to watch her carefully because she's a little rough with him.  I've caught her pinching him and giving his hair a tug.  She also gives him lots of luvs and kisses and wants to comb his hair all the time.

Jace absolutely LOVES the baby.  He calls him Ty Ty and would do anything for him.  When the baby hears Jace's voice he smiles.  Jace likes to lay down next to him for tummy time and just talk to him in a sweet calm voice.  He tells him how much he loves him.  I just wish he would treat Brooke as nice.

My recovery is coming along slowly.  I've been having extreme cramping in the abdominal area and flashes of light in my eyes.  I should probably call my Doc and have it checked out.

Craig is helping out a lot at home and getting used to not being so extremely busy with school.

Baby Ty is doing great!  He eats, sleeps, and poops a lot.  He's only awake for probably 4 hours in a 24 hour time frame.  He recognizes my voice and smell.  He loves to nurse and will start crying if I walk into a room and he hears me because he knows I'm the one with the milk.  He's so happy and smiley when he is awake.  I love it.  He's also the poopiest baby I've ever had.  He goes through so many diapers.  He surprisingly ended up not having jaundice which was a shocker since both of my other babies had it. Really he is just a sweetheart!  He's a keeper.  We all love him so much.
