Pine Wood derby round 2 did not fair so well for Jace. Basically he forgot about it until a few days before. Craig and Jace met over at the Bear cub scout leader's garage because he had a saw so they could cut a design. Jace expected me to paint it but forgot to ask?? The night before the race I reminded him about it and he didn't seem too interested. He was too busy playing Mind Craft. He continued to put it off so I quickly painted it and put it together the night before. We didn't have time to chip out the wood on the bottom to put the weights in so I just glued it on. We had some decals Grandpa Brammer had bought for him last year that I threw on as well. Jace named it Blue Eagle.
There is always that anxious period before the first race ... it is going to be a fast one?? I always hope it's fast so I don't have an upset child. After the first race here I knew we were doomed. lol!! It was quite a bit slower than the rest of the cars. I felt pretty bad for Jace. Race after race he came in last and his face kept getting redder and redder and he pulled his hoody half over his face. After about the 3rd race he came over to me panicked and angry. "YOU ruined my car!! Fix it!!" Now, I felt bad that I didn't do a great job on his car but I tried to explain that if he wanted to do well he needed to do some research and put some of his own effort in. He can't just expect someone else to do it last minute to get a winning car. Jace has a hard time with emotions and I could tell he wanted to cry but instead anger comes out. He doesn't lose well. He needs to work on being a good sport. He wanted to quit and he did disappear to the bathroom for a bit to recollect himself then he finished out the rest of the races. It was embarrassing for him but I'm glad that he didn't quit and he kept going. He continued to be angry and blame me for his slow car though. We had a long talk after about taking more responsibility. He put very little into that car and got very little out of it. We made a goal to do a bit more research on how to build a good pine wood derby car for next year.
Ty LOVED watching all the cars. He was in heaven. He still LOVES cars.
I was SO glad that they awarded Jace with the "Most Patriotic" award for Blue Eagle because it really helped soften the blow of coming in DEAD last every single time. There is always next year.

Pinewood Derby is pretty tough. Some Dad's really know what they are doing and completely take over making the car. But there is something about that activity for cub scouts that is just so fun, even when you don't win. I hope he gets lucky next year.
